What Is a Glass Railing?
A glass railing is a barrier whose infill is a pane of safety glass rather than pickets or cable. The glass is never the only structure: it is carried by a frame, clipped by standoffs, clamped in a base channel, or supported on standalone spigots, and that supporting metal — usually 316 stainless or 6063-T6 aluminum — is what transfers the load to the floor.
Two facts decide everything else. First, the glass must be safety glass: for a guard it is tempered-and-laminated, two or more tempered lites bonded by a structural interlayer (PVB or SGP), so a broken pane still holds together and the barrier keeps performing. Monolithic tempered glass alone is not accepted as a guard infill in most codes. Second, the metal carries the load, not the glass edge — even in a frameless system the spigots or base channel take the line and point loads, and the glass spans between them.
That separation — glass as the visible infill, metal as the hidden structure — is why one manufacturer runs very different looks (framed, semi-framed, spigot-frameless, channel-frameless, curved) from the same glass and hardware families.

Engineering a Glass Guard — Loads, Heights & Anchoring
- Load. 200 lb (0.89 kN) concentrated and 50 lb/ft (0.73 kN/m) line load per IBC 1015 / IRC R312; some balconies use 100 lb/ft or 50 lb/sq ft.
- Heights. 36 in residential, 42 in IBC commercial; 900 mm / 1070 mm (OBC), 1100 mm (UK) on metric projects.
- in sphere rule. The opening under the bottom rail or between glass and floor clears a 4 in (100 mm) sphere — frameless systems close this with a sill or floor-set glass.
- Spigot overturning. Standalone spigots resist an overturning moment; base plate, anchor embedment and glass thickness are sized together.
- Base channel clamping. A continuous shoe transfers load along its length; anchoring into ≥4 in of sound concrete, 12–24 in anchor spacing, keeps deflection within L/60.
- Thermal movement. Long glass runs need allowance for expansion so panels do not bind.

Hardware & Finishes — Stainless Grade and Surface
The metal that holds the glass is exposed to weather, so grade matters. For any coastal, pool or high-humidity site, 316 stainless (with molybdenum for chloride-pitting resistance) is the default; 304 is acceptable only well inland. Finishes: #4 brushed (the practical outdoor standard), #8 mirror (architectural, shows marks), and bead-blasted / satin (soft, low-glare). Marine & Coastal Glass Railing
Glass is inert to salt and chlorine, so the marine risk is in the hardware and frame, not the pane. The specification response: 316 stainless throughout; marine-grade powder-coated aluminum frames with full conversion-coat prep; drainage so water cannot pool at bases; and documented salt-spray testing to ASTM B117 (astm.org). Curved & Bent Glass — The Radius Is the Decision

A curved glass railing is not a straight run with bent posts; the glass itself is hot-bent to a radius, the top rail follows the same arc, and every pane is cut to its trapezoidal shape from CAD. Radius drives cost and feasibility: gentle radii (1500 mm+) are near straight-run pricing, tight radii (under 500 mm) need specialized bending and cost several times more. Hot-bent glass is formed, then tempered and laminated so it stays safety glass; cold-bent (forced into shape after tempering) is not accepted as a guard. The Glass Itself — Types, Thickness & Interlayer
Tempered vs laminated vs tempered-laminated.
Tempered glass is heat-strengthened so it shatters into small dull cubes, but it does not stay in place — which is why guards use tempered-laminated: two tempered lites with a structural interlayer.
Thickness by system.
Typical tempered-laminated builds: 12+12 mm, 10+10 mm or 8+8 mm for light framed runs; 17.5 mm (10+0.76 PVB+10) and 19 mm (12+0.76+12) for spigot and post systems; 21.5 mm and up (12+1.52 SGP+12) for frameless base-channel and high-load balconies. Thinner single lites (12, 13.5 mm) suit framed or standoff systems with short spans.
Interlayer — PVB vs SGP.
PVB (polyvinyl butyral) is the standard interlayer with a minimum around 0.76 mm; it meets most guard loads. SGP (SentryGlas, an ionoplast) is stiffer and stronger, allows thinner total builds for the same rating, and is preferred for tall balconies, glass stairs and high-traffic public barriers.
Edges and finish.
Machine-polished edges are standard for exposed glass; low-iron glass removes the green tint for true clarity; tinted or acid-etched glass adds privacy or solar control. Glass is heat-soaked where specified to reduce the (rare) risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulfide inclusions.

Installation Overview
Three mounts cover nearly every substrate. Surface / base-plate mount (frame bolted to the deck) is simplest. Fascia mount (posts on the deck edge, clears the floor) suits balconies. Core-drilled / channel-set clamps glass flush into a floor channel or drilled hole with adhesive anchor. Into wood, through-bolt; into concrete, chemical or expansion anchors into ≥4 in of sound material. Long runs get expansion provisions so thermal movement does not stress the glass.
Maintenance & Life Cycle
Glass railing is low maintenance: periodic cleaning of the panes, keeping drainage at bases clear, and — on framed systems — occasional hardware tension checks. The glass does not rust or rot; the only lifetime cost is cleaning and, rarely, replacing a damaged pane. Over a 20–30 year life the structure outlasts the building's other finishes.
