What "Frameless Aluminum" Means

 

It is easy to read "frameless" and "aluminum" as a contradiction - frameless means no frame, aluminum means metal. The resolution is that the metal is reduced to a continuous base channel and nothing else:

- No top rail. The glass edge is the top of the guard.

- No posts or balusters. Nothing interrupts the glass between panels.

- One slim aluminum channel. Powder-coated 6063-T6, typically 2–4 in (50–100 mm) tall, runs along the deck and grips the glass base.

 

So the user gets the open, invisible-contained look of frameless glass, delivered as an aluminum system they can color-match to gates, posts elsewhere on the job, or a coastal finish spec. The aluminum is the engineered part; the glass is the infill.

 

The Aluminum Base Channel - the Real Structure

 

The channel, not the glass, is what decides whether the run stands up. Three channel types cover every deck:

 

Channel type How it mounts When to use it
Top-mounted (surface) Bolts to the deck surface; glass sits in the channel. Default for most decks - full floor stays clear, load spreads continuously.
Side-mounted (fascia) Clamps to the deck edge face; glass overhangs the edge. Where the deck top must stay flush, or the view drops away at the rim.
Recessed/embedded Poured into the slab or set into a trench; glass appears to rise from the floor. Premium terraces and pools where a zero-threshold look is the goal.

The channel is extruded 6063-T6, then powder-coated (AAMA 2604 or 2605) so it matches the rest of the aluminum on the project. Glass sets in with structural silicone (wet glaze) or clamps (dry glaze); the channel carries integrated weep holes so water cannot pond against the glass edge.

 

Glass That Sets in the Channel

 

Because the channel is the only support, the glass is structural and the spec is strict:

Build. Laminated-tempered safety glass - two plies of tempered glass bonded by a PVB or SGP interlayer, so a struck panel stays in the channel with no opening to fall through.

Thickness. 19 mm (¾ in) minimum for a frameless channel run; 21.5 mm (17.5 + 4 mm) or 26.5 mm for taller spans, high wind or public-load decks. Thickness is set by panel height, span and the local load calc, not a fixed rule.

Edges. Machine-polished on every visible arris - required for safety and the look.

Options. Clear, low-iron (ultra-clear), frosted, tinted or patterned; heat-soaked glass for high-traffic or coastal sites.

Height. 36 in (914 mm) residential, 42 in (1067 mm) IBC / commercial; 48 in (1200 mm) pool barriers.

The channel system is the right call when the view leads but the job is being run as aluminum - you get the frameless sightline and a single metal (the channel) you can finish, marine-rate and match to the rest of the build.

Engineering the Shoe

A frameless channel run is judged like any guard, with the load path concentrated at the glass base:

- Loads. 200 lb (0.89 kN) concentrated at the top edge and a uniform horizontal load - 50 lb/ft (0.73 kN/m) under IBC 1015 / IRC R312; up to 3.0 kN/m for public spaces under BS 6180. Panel thickness and anchor spacing are calculated to meet this for your span.

- Overturning. The glass + wind pressure create a moment at the channel base; we size the channel wall, anchor pattern and substrate to resist it - typically anchoring into ≥4 in (100 mm) of concrete with chemical or expansion anchors at 12–24 in (300–600 mm) spacing.

- Deflection. Under load, top-edge deflection is held within L/60 so the glass does not permanently deform.

- 4 in sphere rule. The gap under the glass and between panels stays under 4 in (100 mm); the solid panel passes the opening test.

- Anchoring. Base plates to wood (through-bolt + sealed washer) or concrete (chemical anchors); side-mount and recessed channels need solid blocking or a poured trench sized to the load.

 

We issue CAD / shop drawings and load-and-deflection notes with PE-stamp support where the jurisdiction requires sealed calculations, to IBC, IRC, BS 6180 or AS/NZS 1170.

 

Finish, Color and Marine Option

 

The channel is where the aluminum decisions live:

Q: Is a frameless aluminum glass railing actually aluminum?

A: Yes - the slim base channel that grips the glass is extruded 6063-T6 aluminum, powder-coated and finished like any other aluminum rail. The "frameless" part is that there is no top rail or posts; the aluminum is reduced to the one channel that does the structural work.

 

Q: Does the channel need a special finish at the coast?
