A powder coated aluminum railing is the classic low-maintenance guard for decks, porches, balconies and stairs: an extruded 6063-T5/T6 frame with square or round balusters, finished in a baked polyester or fluoropolymer coat that will not rust and rarely needs repainting. Why Aluminum for a Railing
Aluminum is the default for a railing that has to survive outdoors without rust:

- Lightweight. Roughly one-third the weight of steel, so posts and top rails are easy to handle and the load on the substrate is lower - a real advantage on rooftops and elevated decks.

AAMA 2605 is the fluoropolymer (PVDF) class - the same chemistry used on curtain walls that still look right after decades. For any rail exposed to sea air, intense sun or pool chlorine, 2605 is the spec we recommend; 2604 is the value class for sheltered inland sites. We coat to 2605 as standard on exterior rails and will tell you honestly when 2604 is enough.
What Substrate Prep Actually Buys You
A coating is only as good as what it sticks to. The durability gap between a cheap import and a proper rail is mostly in the steps before the powder is ever sprayed:
- Cleaning. Alkaline and acid washes remove mill oils, oxide and particulates.
- Conversion coating. A chrome-free conversion layer (e.g. zirconium) locks paint adhesion and suppresses filiform corrosion under the film.
- Primer (on 2605 systems). A bonded primer bridges metal to the fluoropolymer top coat.
- Cure control. Oven profile and film thickness (typically 60–80 µm) are monitored, not assumed.

The Railing System - Posts, Rails, Balusters
A powder coated aluminum railing is a kit of extruded profiles:

- Anchoring. Base plates to wood (through-bolt + washer) or concrete (≥4 in / 100 mm, chemical or expansion anchors); core-drilled shoes for a flush deck surface.

Coastal, Pool & High-Sun Sites
The environments that destroy a bad coating are the ones we see most:
- Coastal (within ~10 mi / 16 km of the sea). Salt-laden air; specify AAMA 2605 plus full conversion-coat prep, and drainages that stop water pooling in the post base.
- Poolside. Chlorine is corrosive and the barrier must be 48 in with self-closing gates; 2605 and a cleanable finish.
- High-UV / desert. Intense sun drives color shift; 2605 holds gloss and hue where polyester chalks.
- Humid / tropical. Constant moisture; conversion coating and drainage prevent filiform creep.

Is AAMA 2605 worth the premium over 2604?
For any rail in sun, at the coast or by a pool, yes - 2605 is a fluoropolymer that holds color and gloss roughly twice as long as the 2604 polyester class, so it avoids the chalk-and-fade cycle that makes a rail look tired. For a covered inland porch, 2604 is the fair value choice.
Will the coating peel at the cut ends?
Not if the substrate is prepped before coating and the cut ends are sealed or capped. Our rails are coated as complete profiles where possible, and cut ends get a touch-up or a cap so bare aluminum does not sit exposed.
How long does a powder coated aluminum railing last?
With a 2605 fluoropolymer coat and proper conversion-coat prep, 15–25 years of service color is realistic in harsh sites; 2604 runs shorter in sun and salt. The aluminum itself does not rust, so failure is cosmetic, not structural.
Can I get a custom color?
