Power Coated Aluminum Handrail For Indoor Stairs

Power Coated Aluminum Handrail For Indoor Stairs

Details
An aluminum handrail for indoor stairs is the rail you hold on a residential staircase, a mall or office flight, a basement stair or a hospital corridor stair — wall-mounted or post-mounted, built to the pitch of the steps and finished to match the interior. This page is about specifying that rail: the aluminum-vs-stainless trade-off, wall vs post mounting, how to size it to a real stair, and the graspable-profile and continuity rules IBC/ADA actually enforce indoors.

A graspable handrail for interior stairs, built from powder-coated 6063-T6 aluminum and cut to the pitch of your flight - wall-mounted or post-mounted, color-matched to the interior, with code returns and load-tested fixings for residential, commercial and healthcare stairs.

Most "handrail" listings sell a length of tube. For indoor stairs the job is specific: the rail has to follow your stair angle, sit at the right height for a continuous grasp, and read as part of the building - not a hospital afterthought bolted on at the end. An aluminum handrail for indoor stairs is the rail you hold on a residential staircase, a mall or office flight, a basement stair or a hospital corridor stair - wall-mounted or post-mounted, built to the pitch of the steps and finished to match the interior. Which page do you need?

- The same rail, but for EXTERIOR steps? See Aluminum Handrail for Outdoor Steps - weather-rated version with 2605 coat and 316 hardware.
- Stainless version of the same rail? See Stainless Steel Handrails for Outdoor Steps - 316/304 stainless, for where steel tone or chloride resistance is wanted.
- A full railing system (posts + infill + top rail), not just a handrail? See Powder Coated Aluminum Railing or Commercial Exterior Aluminum Walkway Railing.

Just a graspable handrail on the stairs, no infill? You are in the right place.

Why Aluminum For An Indoor Stair Rail

Indoors there is no salt, UV or rain - so the case for aluminum is about weight, finish and value, not corrosion fighting:

1

Light and easy to fix

6063-T6 aluminum is about a third the weight of steel, so a wall-mounted run into drywall or a post-mounted run on a timber stair is simple to anchor and kind to the substrate.

2

Factory color, matched to the interior.

The rail ships powder-coated in your RAL color - black, white, bronze, or a custom match to the balustrade, doors or trim. No on-site painting, no brush marks, no curing smell in an occupied building.

3

Clean, inert surface

A sealed powder coat wipes clean and does not shed, which is why aluminum reads well in clinics, care homes and food-adjacent spaces where a porous or flaking surface is a problem.

4

Cost

Coated aluminum is typically below stainless for the same role and below painted steel once you price the repaint cycle out - a sensible call for long runs in a commercial fit-out.

Because the environment is dry, an interior rail does not need the 2605 / 316 hardware spec an exterior rail does; we coat to AAMA 2604 and use 304 (or 316 where specified) hardware, which keeps the cost down without giving up service life.

Wall-Mounted vs Post-Mounted (Indoor)

Aluminum Handrail for Indoor Stairs 51
01.

Wall-mounted

The rail cantilevers off brackets bolted to the wall or stringer beside the steps - the most common indoor fix, because interior stairs almost always have a wall or stringer. No posts on the treads, clean look, brackets every 36-48 in (900-1200 mm). Into drywall we use backing or toggle anchors rated for the 200 lb (0.89 kN) point load; into concrete or block we use sleeve anchors.

02.

Post-mounted

Upright posts bolt to the treads (base plate) or the side (core-drilled), and the rail runs between them. Used where the stair is open on both sides, or where the design wants a free-standing rail. Posts 4-6 ft (1.2-1.8 m) apart.

Sizing a Handrail to a Real Stair

Off-the-shelf rails rarely fit a real stair, because pitch varies. We size from three numbers you can measure with a tape:
1.Total rise - finished-floor to finished-floor height of the flight.
1.Total run - horizontal span of the flight.
1.Step count - to confirm the pitch is consistent.

From those:
Pitch angle θ = atan(rise ÷ run). Most steps sit between 30° and 45°.
Slope length = √(rise² + run²) - the rail length along the pitch, before extensions.
End extensions. Codes want the rail to extend at least 12 in (300 mm) horizontally beyond the top and bottom nosing, or to return into the wall or a post. Add those extensions to the slope length.
Height. 34-38 in (865-965 mm) measured vertically above the stair nosing line.

Because every stair is a different angle, we cut and bend the aluminum rail (and the posts or brackets) to your measured pitch. Send the rise, run and a photo and we return the exact length and cut list.

Graspable Profile & Continuity - What the Codes Actually Say Indoors

Indoor stairs fall under IBC 1014 / ADA 505 in commercial and multi-family buildings, and IRC R311.7 in homes:

Profile

Circular rails: 1.25-2 in (31.8-50.8 mm) outside diameter.

Non-circular: perimeter 4-6.25 in (100-160 mm) with a maximum cross-section of 2.25 in (57 mm).

Continuity

The rail must run the full length of the flight without a break. On a switchback, the only permitted break is at the landing.

Returns

Each end must return to the wall, floor or a post, or turn downward - so a sleeve or coat cannot catch on the open end.

Load

200 lb (0.89 kN) concentrated at any point, or 50 lb/ft (0.73 kN/m) uniform, with deflection within L/60..

We deliver shop drawings that show the profile, the return detail and the load path, so your inspector or specifier sees compliance on paper before the rail is installed.

Where Indoor Aluminum Handrails Go

Competitive advantage

The company conducted a competitive advantage analysis to identify its strengths and weaknesses compared to its rivals.

Residential stairs

Straight, switchback or spiral residential flights; color-matched to the trim; wall-mounted for the clean look.

01

Commercial interiors

Mall, office, hotel and lobby stairs where a long, consistent, good-looking rail matters and the budget favors aluminum over stainless.

02

Healthcare & care homes

Clinic and hospital corridor stairs, senior-living step rails-the sealed coat wipes clean and the continuous graspable profile meets ADA.

03

Basement & utility stairs.

Often the last rail a building gets; a coated aluminum run is quick to fit and needs no painting

04

Accessible routes

Where the stair forms part of an accessible path, the rail meets ADA 505 continuity and height; for the ramp or walway portion see our Commercial Walkway Railing page.

Engineered to Your Stairs, in Our Plant

A step handrail is made from your stair, not a shelf. Send the rise and run (or a template of the flight), the substrate the fixings land in, the rail height, color and finish, and whether you want wall or post mounting; our engineers return the cut list, the bracket/post schedule, the return detail and load-and-deflection notes for code - with PE-stamp support where the jurisdiction requires it. We extrude the 6063-T6 aluminum, powder-coat it in your RAL color, and cut, bend and TIG-weld the rail to the profile and pitch your steps call for; a sample rail section is available so you can verify the finish and grasp before a full run. Mill pricing, mixed wall-and-post runs, and container or small-batch freight: send your stair and we quote within two business days.

Coating & Color for Interiors

Indoors the coat is about looks and cleanability more than weather:

Finish Look Interior Notes
AAMA 2604 (polyester) Matte/gloss/textured Standard for dry interior; excellent color retention
#4-style satin (coated) Soft directional grain Reads like brushed metal without bare-metal maintenance
Custom RAL Any color match Match balustrade, doors or trim; ships coated, no on-site paint

For most interiors 2604 is the right class; we reserve 2605 for any section that passes an exposed threshold or a covered exterior run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Aluminum or stainless for an indoor stair?

A: Indoors there is no chloride, so coated aluminum is the lighter, color-matched, better-value choice for most projects; stainless is picked when the design calls for a bare-metal tone or the rail also serves an exterior section. See our stainless page for that case.

Q: Can the rail be color-matched to our interior?

A: Yes - any RAL, including black, white, bronze and custom matches, in matte, gloss or textured. The rail ships coated, so there is no on-site painting.
Wall-mounted into drywall - is that strong enough? Yes, with the right anchors. We specify backing or toggle anchors rated for the 200 lb point load, or sleeve anchors into concrete/block. Send the substrate and we return the schedule.

Q: How do I know how long the rail should be?

A: Measure the total rise and total run; the slope length is √(rise² + run²), then add at least 12 in at the top and bottom (or returns). Send us those two numbers and we return the exact cut length for your pitch.

Q: What makes a handrail "graspable"?

A: Circular rail: 1.25-2 in outside diameter. Non-circular: perimeter 4-6.25 in with a max cross-section of 2.25 in. We build to the code profile.

Q: Do the ends need to return?

A: Yes, under IBC/IRC/ADA the ends must return to the wall, floor or a post, or turn downward. Ours include it by default.

Q: Is it ADA compliant?

A: The graspable profile, 34-38 in height, continuity and returns meet IBC 1014 / ADA 505. For a continuous ramp or walkway run, see our Commercial Walkway Railing page.

Q: Do you provide engineering for the handrail?

A: Yes - cut list, bracket/post schedule, return detail and load-and-deflection notes, with PE-stamp support where your jurisdiction requires sealed calculations, to IBC, IRC, ADA 505 or BS 6180.

Q: What coating class do I need indoors?

A: Dry interior → AAMA 2604 is standard. Any section exposed to weather → AAMA 2605.

Q: Is the surface suitable for a clinic or care home?

A: Yes - a sealed powder coat wipes clean and does not shed, which reads well in healthcare and senior-living stairs where a porous or flaking surface is a problem.
